Tracking:
Tracking means to find out
vital data about the visitors on a website or sales page. It is
mostly done by placing a Tracking script on the web server of
the site which is then able to collect all relevant visitor
information and organize them in a statistic sheet.
The most important
information are:
-
how many visitors
saw the site and where did they come from (i.e. what ad
or link did they
click on to arrive at the site)
-
who took action on
the site, such as clicking on an ad on the site,
entering his email address in an opt-in box,
filled out a form, etc.
-
how many sales were
made and by whom
There are much more
sophisticated Tracking scripts which can deliver even more
data.

Example
for a Tracking result delivered by
AdSpy Tracker, a software specifically
designed for AdSense
websites. The list on the right hand reveals the ratio
of visitors vs. ad clicks for each single page. This
information is not available from the AdSense stats
provided by Google. From the dropdown menu on the left
one can see that the Tracking software delivers
information in still other categories like the referring
URLs, IP addresses or keywords. This can give hints for
what keywords to concentrate on one’s SEO
measures or PPC campaigns for optimum AdSense
revenue.
The value of Tracking for
an Internet marketer can hardly be overestimated. It goes hand
in hand with testing
and testing can only be
professionally done with Tracking.
Tracking solves the well known marketing problem of “I know
that 50% of my advertising
is ineffective but I don’t
know which 50%”!
The solution to this problem is Tracking. For example if you
could find out that your ad in newsletter A had a
CTR
of 25% and 10% of these visitors were purchasing your
product while on the other hand the same ad in newsletter
B performed only with 2% CTR and 0 sales, you would of
course cancel your ads in B, spend your whole ad budget
for A and multiply your profits. That’s how important
Tracking is!
