Pixel Advertising (Pixel
Site):
This is a web page
which is divided up into an array of pixels. These pixels are
then sold as advertising
space. The pixels purchased can be filled with tiny
graphics (or not so tiny if more pixels have been
purchased) which are linked to the advertiser’s
website
.
The original idea
came from a British student named Alex Tew, who created
the Milliondollarhomepage
in August 2005. He sold the 1million available pixels on
his page for $1 each. It became a huge success and he earned
more than $1million within a few weeks. The last 1.000 pixels
were auctioned off on eBay
with a winning bid of about $40.000. The reason for
this was that at the time when pixels still were
available there was huge media coverage and
immense traffic which resulted
in temporary Google PageRank
(PR) of 8 for the Milliondollarhomepage. Therefore
many webmasters considered it a good investment to
purchase a link from a high traffic PR 8
site.

. Moving the mouse over a graphics link a small window
appears with a tag to the site the link directs to. To be seen
in the upper left corner.
After having been ridiculed in the beginning the
Milliondollarhomepage soon began to be copied all over the
place when it’s success became evident. But no clone site
became only remotely as successful.
There were also variations popping up like
500words.com
and clone sites to this idea.
[Pixel is a term put
