Permalink:

A Permalink is a url pointing to a specific blog post in a blog or a specific thread in a forum.

As these two types of websites are continuously updated with the newest content on top and older content being edged out of it's position on the top page, a Permalink provides a means to directly access older posts.

From a SEO viewpoint an important point for an Internet marketer running a blog is the format of the Permalink. Wordpress, as the most frequently used blogging platform, uses a default Permalink structure like:

http://exampleblog.com/?p=123456

where 123456 would stand for the post ID.

But Wordpress provides several setup options to modify the format to:

http://exampleblog.com/postdatum/posttitle or

http://exampleblog.com/category/posttitle

The obvious advantage of a Permalink in these formats is that it contains the post title or even post title AND category and therefore keywords. This adds more value to the link in terms of search engine rankings.
