Niche Marketing:
A niche market consists of
a select group of potential customers sharing a common interest
or demand.
Niches can be defined on a
gradient from quite general to very specific.
For example: From “sport” to more specific “Golfers” to more
specific “beginning Golfers trying to learn a correct
swing”.
Another example would be
the rather sweeping niche “health” to more specific “diet and
weight loss” to even more specific “people looking for a
special nutrition supplement product or brand”.
Niche Marketing then would
consist of
-
finding a
profitable niche and
-
creating,
promoting and selling product
s or
services to these people which meet the
demand in exactly this area of
interest.
While b) is a matter of
day-to-day Internet marketing techniques, a) can be done either
by keyword
research or by just sharpen one’s
awareness in the everyday life to what people are doing,
reading, buying etc. or in general what they are interested
in.
The wider the addressed
Niche is the greater the number of potential customers to
promote to. But the competition will be huge as the big
companies are heavily populating these market areas, even more
so when a lot of money is to be made in this niche. The
mortgage- and the debt consolidation-niche would be only two
examples fitting in this category.
Niche Marketing is
especially interesting for the individual Internet marketer
with small budget. The way for him to be successful is, to find
a niche which:
-
Is small and
untapped enough that it did not yet attract an
overwhelming amount of competition, especially not the
big companies with big ad budgets.
-
Is not so small
that it would be too hard to find the customers at
all.
-
There are
products/services involved which can be sold for a
profitable price and people are willing and able to
buy.
Finding a Niche which
fulfills all three conditions requires keen observation and
know how (or sheer luck) but it can mean a sure way to a
considerable online income, providing a marketer knows how to
achieve b) above.
[Niche derives from
Latin nidus = nest,
nidiculare = making a
nest;
Marketing comes from
Latin mercatus = trading,
market]
