Hoax:

A Hoax is an effort which tricks an audience into believing that something false is true. It is an attempt to deceive people. In Internet marketing the most common kind of Hoaxes are the virus Hoax and electronic chain letters. The main purpose of a Hoax is to spread to as many as people possible.

There are:

  • Virus Hoaxes which generally consist of email messages warning the recipients of a destructive virus and that it should be forwarded to others to warn them of the threat. This can lead to the user deleting some his files under the pretext of deleting the virus.

  • Chain Letters: There are also email messages, usually emotional ones. It asks you send it to others, warning you of disastrous consequences if you don’t.

These messages are a real waste of time, money and energy. The next time you get these messages, verify it with any of the leading web sites which warn you of viruses/viruses hoaxes. In addition, you can reply to the sender that it is a hoax. The other effective solution is to simply delete it.

[Hoaxis of uncertain origin, probably comes from hocus = conjurer, juggler or from the magic phrase hocus-pocus]
