Freebie:
Something given away
for free in an attempt to establish a positive relation to a
potential customer or as an incentive to subscribe to a
mailing
list. This can be a
piece of software, an ebook, report, audio- or video file
or a free ecourse. Even if it’s no charge the Freebie
should still be of high perceived value to the customer
otherwise it would harm the reputation of the “spender”
and rather create the opposite of a customer eager to buy
from him.

Popup
offering a mp3-file as a Freebie on Jim Edward’s
“I Gotta Tell
You”-site. Clicking on the
link directs the user to a squeeze page where he has to opt-in
to Jim’s mailing list. Only then he gets access to the free
audio.
[Freebie is of uncertain origin but
perhaps comes from free + bee having to do with the phrase “to
put the bee on” = borrowing money without intention to pay it
back]
