Broken Link:

A Broken Link is a link that is not valid anymore as a click on it doesn’t lead to the intended URL but to a 404 error page (page cannot be found). This can happen because of a typo in the HTML code of the target URL or because the page you intend to link to has moved or doesn’t exist (anymore).

Broken links in a website can lead to a downgrade of this site in the search engines which causes it to fall back in the SERPs. Hence a webmaster has to take care that all the links within his site are still valid. This can be an arduous task but fortunately there are webservices which can do this fast and with ease.

[Link comes from Old Danish lænkia = chain]

  • Here you can find a free Link Checking Service. One only has to enter the URL to have all external and internal links checked for validity. The resulting list gives clues what links have to be replaced or repaired.
